Is technology meant to be more than a set of best practices?

To get the most from technology all you have to do is live up to these best practices and meet the minimum standards. Technology and the IT staff are there only to assist other staff in meeting their objectives. IT and technology are only meant to be tools used by everyone, they do not need to be a factor in the process or planning. As long as you are have a stable infrastructure, update your software, backup, have a good web site and leverage a few tools for cost savings (like VOIP), then you are good to go. There is no further need for technology.

With all of the best practices and recommendations out there, does this seem to be true? All have you have to do is these basic steps?

Seriously?

Short answer: No

Technology is just a particularily needy ladder, or wheel, or gun.

Conches, Are you kidding? You think that "Technology is just a particularily needy ladder, or wheel, or gun."

Can't it be so much more? IT staff have a very unique perspective on the world. Most of the time we dont think like others. We are usually more adapt at changing things slightly to ensure better results, better at process mapping (including mapping practices to the tools), plus are good at finding root causes.

Doesnt anyone else see that the way IT staff think can be a huge bonus to the planning process?

Not to mention that when technology is used correctly and aligned properly with your mission and strategies it can make you more wildly successful than you ever dreamed or it can crush your dreams and finances if ignored, just one small mistake and a repeat of the VFW stolen laptop or stolen data from colleges, YIKES.

All this and it is just a tool! WHAT!
